WHAT INDUSTRY EXPERTS SAY: "We introduced the book at the last training course in July and it was perused with great interest. I found it particularly interesting as much of the content is similar to the content of our training manual and, like Mr. Ferry, we love lists! We will certainly keep it in our library and recommend it to our course participants as essential reading."
Ms. Pamela Spruce, Australian Butler Services
WHAT READERS SAY: "Your book is superb and has been so helpful. ..... You've written a really great book, covered everything I could think of."
RH, Butler, Florida
WHAT INDUSTRY EXPERTS SAY: "This book is written by a real butler for those involved in or interested in private service today. Steven Ferry conveys intimate knowledge of the skills and mindset needed to give great service. The result of his efforts confirms his objective to impart to the employee the "basics of butling and running a household successfully"; and to the employer, advice on "everything you need to know about what your butler or household manager could and should be doing and how to manage him or her."
"Butlers and Household Managers is written in short paragraphs with a straightforward and clear style, which I like. Mixing the history of butlers with detailed instructions on everything from serving, to packing, to afternoon tea and much more in compact prose, is interesting and not stuffy. His advice for specific situations like dealing with unexpected overnight guests in the boss' bedroom was amusing and not far fetched. I found my attention held through most of his fine effort.
"I say most, because I must admit I did not study the almost 100 appendix pages which are neatly designed to support the chapters of the book. When Steven discusses the valeting of clothing in Chapter 6, for instance, there is a neat checklist for caring for clothing in Appendix 6. So not only do you get the overview and instruction on various concerns of the butler/house manager, you also get the list of details on all the relevant points about the topic.
"Maybe I did not learn a lot of new subject matter, but I felt good seeing my professional field presented as the fine blend of detailed skills and attitude that can be so rewarding for employer and employee in the 21st century of private service."
Mr. Werner Leutert, Vice Chairman and Membership Secretary, International Guild of Professional Butlers
